This includes photovoltaic solar power and wind energy, electric vehicles, batteries, and smart grids - insight into the different technologies, their economics and impacts on the grid. I can also assist in evaluating impacts on energy policy, renewable energy development, renewable energy contribution to greenhouse gas reduction, and technology options.
RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
I provide assistance with new product development requiring research into market requirements, technology options and roadmap development.
I have extensive international experience in this area, as well as at national and regional levels in New Zealand. More detail can be found in Recent Projects.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
I have led one of New Zealand's highest profile renewable energy projects, the Green Grid research programme, which was awarded two Gold ratings from the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) indicating achievement exceeding expectations.
I specialise in the establishment and management of projects, particularly in the area of electricity markets or involving new technology and innovation, such as software, solar power, electric vehicles, battery storage, smart grids including demand response and dynamic rating.
ABOUT ME
With a career spanning 30 years in energy and technology industries, my expertise spans research, engineering, marketing and executive leadership.
I have a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, and a Bachelor of Engineering with first class Honours. My doctorate was in power quality monitoring, and included measuring power quality during commissioning of the New Zealand inter-island HVDC transmission link, and monitoring arc furnace installations in northern Spain.
My experience in innovation includes new technology invention and commercialisation. From roles in the electricity industry and the GREEN Grid research programme I led, I have an in-depth understanding of renewable energy, smart-grids, and the electricity industry and energy use in New Zealand.
Having led one of New Zealand's most significant research projects into boosting our proportion of renewable energy (the GREEN Grid project) I can offer a unique perspective on the future of our grid, key influences on it's performance and how it will be transformed by solar and wind energy systems together with demand side technologies such as electric vehicles and batteries.
I have delivered results for businesses from developing and implementing strategy - resulting in ongoing success and growth, to running projects involving new technology, to leading large research programmes.
